Australia has almost unanimously passed a bill legalising marriage equality, becoming the 25th country to recognise same-sex marriage.
Following an emotional debate at Parliament house in Canberra and the Prime Minister declaring, "This is Australia; fair, diverse, loving and filled with respect for everyone," the vote passed with only four in opposition, with members celebrating with tears of joy as they let the moment sink in.
The vote follows a recent national postal survey showing 61% of 12 million people who responded were in favour of the step towards marriage equality and for same-sex marriage to be made legal.
