Documents required to get married in Tanzania

Conjuring up visions of safaris, Kilimanjaro and the Indian Ocean, Tanzania is certainly the perfect romantic wedding destination. Whether you're looking for a paradise wedding at Elewana Kilindi in Tanzania or a safari wedding at Serengeti National Park, this is the one for you. If you're thinking of getting married in Tanzania, then fear not, it is very simple to do so. Follow these steps:

  • There are no residency requirements to get married in Tanzania, take the documents listed below to the Registrar of Marriages to obtain a marriage licence.
  • As Tanzania is part of the Commonwealth, you will not need a Certificate of No Impediment but instead just a No Trace Letter from the General Register Office which can be accessed here: https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
  • Your intent to marry must be posted for 21 days before exchanging your vows. If you want to save time you can apply for a Special Marriage Licence from the Registrar of Marriages, which must be notarised by a lawyer and returned to the Registrar.
  • Once you have your licence, the date of your wedding must be arranged with the District Commissioner's office or the church where you will get married.

Necessary Documents

  • Notarised copy of passports
  • Two Passport photos
  • Original birth certificates
  • Decree of absolute (if previously divorced)
  • Death certificate (if widowed)
  • No Trace Letter
  • Two witnesses
