Can I Legally get Married in Montenegro?

Montenegro is full of stunning wedding venues such as the Aman Sveti Stefan and Hotel Splendid in Budva. As long as you follow the protocol in terms of paperwork, it is relatively simple to marry in Montenegro. Just follow these steps closely:
  1. If you would like to marry in Montenegro, the first thing you need to do is organise a Certificate of No Impediment. This certificate basically states that it is legally possible for you and your partner to marry.
  2. In order to obtain this CNI, contact your local registry office in your home country. You will need to apply for this CNI between 3 - 6 months before the marriage. Confusingly, a CNI in Scotland is valid for 3 months, whilst a CNI issued in England, Wales or Northern Ireland does not have an expiry date. Nonetheless, it’s worth enquiring with the Montenegrin registry office to see if they have expiry limits in place.
  3. It is also possible that you will have to exchange your British CNI for a Montenegrin alternative. If in any doubt, contact the embassy in Montenegro directly and they will give you the most recent advice.
  4. Once you have sorted your CNI, it is essential that all the documents (listed below) are translated into Serbian/Montenegrin by a professional translator.
  5. The final step is to submit all the documents to the relevant registry office in Montenegro at least 7 days before the ceremony.
