Documents required to get married in Austria

Getting married in Austria is relatively straightforward as there is no minimum residency period but the most important thing to bear in mind is that only civil ceremonies are legally recognised here. There are some beautiful areas to get married in, including Vienna & Salzberg and stunning venues including The Schloss Prielau. There a few steps that you need to follow in order to get married in Austria:

  1. File your marriage application no more than 6 months before your wedding day at the main registry office in Vienna. Typically, you should both attend in person, although this may be waived if neither of you are Austrian residents.
  2. Provide all the documentation listed below in order to go ahead with a civil ceremony.
  3. If you are looking to have a religious ceremony then you must first be legally married in a registry office either in Austria or your home country.

Necessary Documents

  • Certificate of No Impediment/Certificate of Freedom to Marry
  • Proof of residence
  • Full passport
  • Photocopies of the picture page of the passports of the bride and the groom
  • Photocopies of the picture page of the passports for your two witnesses, listing their name, address and occupation
  • Birth Certificate
