Tower of London:
Nearly a thousand years of history surround every event at the Tower of London. The fortress was begun by William the Conqueror in 1066 and has witnessed coronations, royal intrigue and centuries of ceremony in the time since. It is, in every sense, a venue like no other in the world.
Managed by Historic Royal Palaces, the Tower opens its ancient walls for a strictly limited number of private evening events each year. For couples who want a wedding celebration set within one of the most recognisable buildings on earth, with Tower Bridge visible from the grounds and the Thames directly alongside, the Tower delivers a backdrop that no hotel ballroom or converted barn can replicate. Moreover, exclusive after-hours access to the Crown Jewels and a personal Yeoman Warder escort are available as part of the event experience, making it genuinely unlike any other wedding venue in London.
The Historic Event Spaces
Four distinct spaces are available for private hire, each with its own character and capacity.
The White Tower is the heart of the fortress and one of the most recognisable Norman keeps in the world. Soaring architecture, glittering suits of armour and royal treasures surround guests throughout the evening. It holds up to 240 for a standing reception and 90 for a round table dinner.
The New Armouries is the largest and most flexible space. It blends period character with a versatile layout that suits larger celebrations. It holds up to 300 for a standing reception and 240 for a round table dinner. The New Armouries can also be combined with the White Tower for larger events.
The Medieval Palace was built for Edward I and offers richly atmospheric chambers for more intimate dinners. It holds up to 80 for a standing reception and 40 for dinner. From May to September, the Medieval Palace Battlements are also available as a drinks reception space with views across the Thames. For groups of up to 40, the evening can conclude with the Ceremony of the Keys – the 700-year-old tradition of locking the Tower gates, carried out by the Yeoman Warders at nightfall.
The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers offers an intimate and atmospheric setting for smaller celebrations. It holds up to 100 for a standing reception and 80 for a seated dinner.
The Crown Jewels
One of the most extraordinary additions available to any wedding celebration is exclusive after-hours access to the Crown Jewels. Long after the public has departed, guests step privately into the Jewel House for a private encounter with these world-renowned treasures. This experience is available as an add-on to evening events at the White Tower or New Armouries and has no equivalent at any other wedding venue in London.
The Yeoman Warder Experience
From arrival, guests are welcomed and escorted by a personal Yeoman Warder throughout the event. Serving as both guide and guardian, the Warder shares the history of the palace and ensures the evening runs seamlessly. This ceremonial presence gives the celebration a sense of occasion that is entirely unique to a Tower of London event.
Practical Considerations
Events at the Tower of London take place in the evening, typically from 18:45 to 22:30. The venue is available for private hire through the Historic Royal Palaces events team, who work with couples and their planners to design the celebration. A list of approved suppliers, venue stylists and AV specialists supports the planning process.
The Tower is not a hotel, so guest accommodation is arranged through nearby luxury hotels in the City, Tower Bridge and wider central London. Availability is limited due to the Tower’s status as a working heritage site and major visitor attraction. Early enquiry is strongly advisable.
Is the Tower of London Right for Your Wedding?
The Tower suits couples for whom the setting itself is the defining priority – an evening wedding celebration within one of the world’s most extraordinary buildings, with a level of drama and historical depth that no purpose-built venue can offer. In addition, the optional Crown Jewels viewing and Ceremony of the Keys create moments during the celebration that guests will discuss for years afterwards.
However, it is not the venue for couples wanting a daytime ceremony, a countryside setting, on-site accommodation, or a venue with the flexibility of an all-day hire. The Tower operates to a precise format and schedule. As a result, it suits couples who are comfortable working within that structure and want the most iconic possible London backdrop in return.
