Blenheim Palace:
There are very few wedding venues in England that genuinely stop people in their tracks. Blenheim Palace is one of them. Built in the English Baroque style between 1705 and 1722, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the hereditary seat of the Dukes of Marlborough. It remains home to the 12th Duke and Duchess today. The scale of the building, the 2,000 acres of Capability Brown landscaped parkland and the more than 90 acres of formal gardens create a setting that is simply unlike anywhere else in England. Those gardens include the Water Terraces, the Rose Garden and the Duke’s private Italian Garden.
Weddings here are grand occasions by nature. The palace suits larger celebrations rather than intimate gatherings, and the range of spaces allows different parts of the day to take place across distinct settings within the estate. There is no on-site hotel accommodation, so couples arrange guest stays in the surrounding area, with Woodstock and Oxford both nearby.
The Principal Spaces
The Long Library is one of the longest rooms in any British stately home. It houses 10,000 books and the Willis Organ. It also looks out over the Water Terraces designed by Achille Duchêne. The Long Library holds up to 300 guests for a drinks reception and up to 200 for a seated dinner. For the largest celebrations, a marquee on the South Lawn works alongside it, extending capacity to up to 1,000 guests.
The Orangery is a light-filled space with arched windows and a glass-panelled roof. It overlooks the Duke’s Italian Garden and has its own bar area and terrace. It holds up to 200 guests for a drinks reception and up to 120 for a seated dinner. In addition, the roof was restored in 2023 using original slate, making it the first Grade I listed building in England to undergo this type of restoration.
The Intimate Spaces
The Great Hall is the main entrance to the palace. Its painted ceiling and stone floor give it a grandeur that suits both a seated dinner for up to 120 and a drinks reception alongside the Long Library. Private tours of the Palace State Rooms also start here.
The Marlborough Room was originally the Palace kitchen. Its double-vaulted ceiling rises to the full height of the building and it has two chandeliers and a large original fireplace. It works well for smaller wedding ceremonies, intimate receptions and pre-dinner drinks before guests move to the Orangery or Long Library.
The Water Terraces suit summer drinks receptions, with large fountains and ponds on either side and views across the Great Lake and grounds beyond.
Catering
Searcys is the named approved caterer for the Orangery. The venue permits pre-approved outside caterers in the Great Hall and Long Library. A catering marquee is required for most in-palace catering events. The palace also requires Blenheim Palace natural mineral water at all events regardless of caterer. Couples should note this when planning their menus.
Photography
Wedding couples have exclusive photography and videography rights at Blenheim Palace. Third parties cannot conduct professional portrait, engagement or pre-wedding shoots on the estate, in the palace or in the gardens. Couples also have the option of a private buggy tour of the parkland for wedding day photography. Is Blenheim Palace Right for Your Wedding?
Blenheim Palace suits couples planning a genuinely grand celebration where the heritage, scale and drama of the setting are the priority. The Long Library, the Orangery, the Water Terraces and the Capability Brown parkland together create a day that no other venue in England can replicate. In addition, the exclusive photography rights mean the estate belongs entirely to the couple during the shoot.
It is not suited to couples wanting an intimate celebration, on-site accommodation or a venue that operates as a conventional hotel. The palace operates as a working historic estate, so wedding dates, space availability and permissions vary by season and scale. Early enquiry is strongly recommended.
