We recently had the pleasure of visiting some incredible wedding venues in South Africa. We have created a handpicked selection of venues that we loved, and that we know would create an unforgettable venue for your destination wedding.
Birkenhead House
Birkenhead House is a cool beach hotel in Hermanus, located on a cliff overlooking stunning coastline. From the front terrace you might glimpse whales frolicking in the Atlantic or a pod of dolphins nearby.
This venue is perfect for an intimate wedding celebration of up to 40 guests. In addition, the hotel provides 11 rooms, which can accommodate 22 guests. There is a narrow pool running through the centre of the hotel which is a focal point for the venue. During our visit, we found that the whole venue felt light and airy - perfect for a summer celebration.
La Residence
La Residence is located in the Franschhoek valley, offering incredible views of the vineyards, plum orchards and the mountains. The venue offers multiple event spaces for your wedding of up to 150 guests, both indoor and outdoor, as well as the option for a marquee wedding.
The outside of the building is an Italian-inspired bright terracotta, inside, the rooms are all unique are offer vibrant colours and decor. This venue is supposedly one of Elton John’s favourites!
Mont Rochelle
Mont Rochelle is a remarkable hotel with views over the Franschhoek valley. This incredible vineyard offers both wine tasting and delicious food, two very important considerations for any wedding.
The venue offers a Manor House which can be hired exclusively, which is ideal for your stay following the wedding. We loved the manicured lawn for a wedding celebration with far reaching views over the valley, although there are many options available which can be tailored to your taste.
This venue is extraordinary and must be considered if you are planning a destination wedding in South Africa.
Belmond Mount Nelson
The Belmond Mount Nelson is located in Cape Town. We were lucky enough to stay for a weekend and soak in the atmosphere of the venue. The venue's position in the heart of the city at the foot of the magnificent Table Mountain is stunning.
The hotel offers seven wings, therefore there are plenty of event spaces available for your wedding. If you are looking to plan a lavish celebration, the large lawn is perfect for an outdoor ceremony alongside the elaborate Ball Room for your reception. Intimate gatherings can also be arranged, transforming the swimming pool area to accommodate a smaller wedding party. In addition, the restaurant terrace provides breathtaking views for an intimate outdoor wedding breakfast.
The restaurant offers panelled walls and an air of opulence which is infectious through to the Planet Room and Conservatory, the perfect setting for an elegant and regal wedding.
Boschendal
Boschendal is a working farm and vineyard located in the centre of Franschhoek, Paarl and Stellenbosch. Outdoor weddings here can take place in the beautiful gardens at the front of the house. For an elaborate celebration the Olive Press is perfect, as it can cater for larger numbers and provides incredible views of the vineyard.
There are beautiful self-catering cottages available for your guests to stay, as well as a range of activities. A wine-tasting experience is a must, as well as hiking and biking around the surrounding countryside.
The legalities
It is possible to legally get married in South Africa with similar conditions to Western countries. It is easier to legally marry in your home country and exchange your vows and rings at your destination wedding. However, if you want to legally tie the knot in South Africa then you need to follow these steps.
