Casterton Grange Estate:
Sitting between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, Casterton Grange is unlike most exclusive use wedding venues in England. The Victorian mansion has a distinctively pink exterior, ornate entertaining terraces and a Walled Garden. It is steeped in history, yet it feels genuinely lived-in rather than institutional. The venue is run personally by Anneka, who coordinates every wedding herself. That personal involvement runs through every review couples leave and is one of the clearest reasons people choose it.
Two distinct wedding formats are available. Intimate weddings suit up to 50 guests within the house and its gardens, with the whole estate sleeping up to 34 of those guests across its four residential properties. Marquee weddings extend to 150 guests, with a sailcloth marquee positioned beside the private lakes. In both formats, the estate is entirely yours for the duration of the stay.
Intimate Weddings
For celebrations of up to 50 guests, the estate works as a house wedding in the fullest sense. Ceremonies take place in the Orangery or in one of several outdoor settings across the grounds. After the ceremony, guests move to the Italianate terraces, the Walled Garden or the Grand Hall for drinks and canapés. The Gothic Suite hosts the wedding reception, with Michelin-standard dining and a setting that feels curated rather than generic.
The weekend format works particularly well here. Close family and friends stay across the four estate properties for two or three days, enjoying meals together, using the grounds and celebrating in a way that a single-day event rarely allows. Activities available on the estate include archery, tennis, hot tubs, wild swimming, snooker, badminton, yoga and garden games.
Marquee Weddings
For larger celebrations of up to 150 guests, a sailcloth marquee is erected beside Casterton’s private lakes. The setting combines the grandeur of the main house with the flexibility of a marquee reception. Ceremonies take place outdoors on the estate or at a nearby church. Guests who stay on site use the 17 bedrooms across the four properties. Additional guests can find accommodation in Kirkby Lonsdale, a short drive away.
This format also works well for cultural weddings. The estate has hosted English Indian weddings, mixed cultural celebrations and micro weddings for international guests. The flexibility of the outdoor spaces and the personal coordination from Anneka make adapting to specific traditions straightforward.
Accommodation
Four residential properties make up the estate. The main Casterton Grange house is the centrepiece, a Victorian mansion with grand entertaining spaces and multiple bedrooms. Grange Barn, Grange Lodge and Grange Stables offer additional accommodation across the estate, each with its own character. Together, the four properties provide 17 bedrooms sleeping up to 34 guests.
Estate properties can be booked individually for smaller stays or taken together for exclusive use weddings. The ability to keep the whole wedding party on site for a full weekend is one of the most consistent themes across couple reviews. Several describe it as feeling like their own home for the duration.
Is Casterton Grange Right for Your Wedding?
Casterton Grange suits couples who want a genuinely private, relaxed and personal wedding in beautiful Cumbrian countryside, where the venue feels like a home rather than a hire space. The two-format approach means it works for celebrations anywhere between 20 and 150 guests. Additionally, the personal coordination from Anneka and her team means the planning process feels supported throughout.
However, it is not the right choice for couples wanting a formal ballroom setting, a hotel with conference-style service, or a venue with a large on-site accommodation block for guests above 34. The estate works best when couples embrace the weekend format and the flexibility it offers.
