Sudeley Castle & Gardens:

Over 1,000 years of history surround you at Sudeley. The castle itself was built in 1443 and sits within 1,200 acres of rolling Cotswolds countryside outside Winchcombe, Gloucestershire. It remains the private home of Lady Ashcombe and the Dent-Brocklehurst family, which gives it a warmth and intimacy that sets it apart from more commercial castle venues.

Sudeley has direct royal connections. Katherine Parr, the last of Henry VIII’s six wives, is buried in St Mary’s Chapel within the castle grounds. The Queen’s Garden takes its name from four queens who walked these grounds: Anne Boleyn, Katherine Parr, Lady Jane Grey and Elizabeth I. As a result, the backdrop to a Sudeley wedding carries a depth of history that very few venues in England can match.

The castle hosts a limited number of weddings each year. This means each couple receives genuine personal attention throughout the planning process and on the day itself. In 2025, Sudeley was awarded Best Castle Wedding Venue in the Cotswolds at the Cotswolds Awards. It is also a member of Historic Houses.

Ceremony Venues

Sudeley offers several distinct ceremony settings, from a medieval chapel to open-air gardens and rose-covered ruins.

St Mary’s Chapel stands in the heart of the castle gardens. It was built around 1070 and hosts blessing ceremonies delivered by a local vicar, celebrant or a friend. The chapel accommodates up to 130 guests and offers one of the most atmospheric ceremony settings available at any wedding venue in the Cotswolds.

For outdoor ceremonies, the Haha provides views over the rose garden with the castle as a backdrop and long pastoral views across the Cotswold hills. The ancient Tithe Barn frames ceremonies with flower-scented ruins. Together, these spaces give couples a genuine choice between intimate and expansive settings.

The Spaces

The Queen’s Garden is the centrepiece of the estate and the natural setting for a drinks reception. It is enclosed by double-planted, 200-year-old yew hedges and named after the four queens it commemorates. Roses fill the garden throughout summer, and a fountain sits at its centre.

The Orangery is the principal indoor wedding breakfast space. It is a light-filled, versatile venue with far-reaching views across the terrace to the Cotswold hills beyond. It accommodates up to 150 guests.

The Mulberry Lawn offers alfresco dining surrounded by castle walls and the spectacular ruins of the Royal Apartment Banqueting Hall. This setting is well suited to summer wedding breakfasts and creates a distinctly theatrical backdrop.

The Castle Coach House serves as the evening celebration space. As the light fades over the estate, it becomes the natural home for dancing and late-night celebrations within the castle walls.

The North Lawn accommodates marquees of all sizes for larger or exclusive celebrations. It sits between the tree-lined castle entrance and the Tithe Barn ruins, with wedding celebrations reflected in the estate’s large carp pond.

Accommodation

Sudeley has 19 holiday cottages on the estate, offering accommodation for over 100 guests in total. The properties range from a converted paper mill and old forge to 18th-century workers’ cottages and new builds in Cotswold stone. Many are dog-friendly and come with private gardens.

The Castle Gatehouse is available as a honeymoon option for the couple. Most of the cottages suit groups of three to fourteen guests. As a result, Sudeley works particularly well for multi-day wedding celebrations where guests want to remain on the estate together.

Catering

Sudeley’s wedding team works with couples to tailor catering to the style of celebration. Options range from canapés and alfresco dining on the Mulberry Lawn to formal wedding breakfasts in the Orangery. Menus draw on local and seasonal produce. Full details are provided on enquiry.

Is Sudeley Castle Right for Your Wedding?

Sudeley suits couples who want a wedding set within genuinely historic grounds, with the flexibility to move between indoor and outdoor spaces across the day. The estate accommodates celebrations of all sizes, from intimate gatherings in the Castle Library to larger marquee weddings on the North Lawn. The on-site cottage accommodation also makes it an ideal choice for a wedding weekend rather than a single-day event.

However, it may not suit couples looking for a modern or urban setting, or those whose guests have limited mobility given the grounds and outdoor spaces involved. Pricing starts from £5,650 for smaller celebrations and from £25,000 for exclusive hire of the castle and grounds.
