Somerley House:

Perched on the high west bank overlooking the River Avon’s water meadows, two miles north of Ringwood, Somerley House occupies one of the more quietly dramatic positions of any wedding venue in Hampshire. The estate sits on the border of Hampshire and Dorset, with the New Forest to the east and open parkland stretching across 7,000 acres in every direction.

The house has been in the family of Lord and Lady Normanton since 1828, when the 2nd Earl of Normanton acquired it and set about completing the unfinished Wyatt interiors. He also added the 90-foot Picture Gallery in 1850 to house what became one of the finest private collections of works by Sir Joshua Reynolds in existence outside public galleries. That gallery remains the heart of the house today and the principal space for weddings. The current Earl of Normanton still lives here, which gives Somerley an atmosphere that no amount of restoration can manufacture.

The estate has also become one of the more sought-after filming locations in the country. The Crown, Bridgerton and Amazon’s Red, White and Royal Blue have all used Somerley as a setting. As a result, there is a cinematic quality to the house and grounds that couples frequently notice when they visit.

The Picture Gallery and Ceremony Spaces

The Picture Gallery is the defining space at Somerley. At 90 feet long, it holds up to 140 guests for a ceremony and wedding breakfast. The original Georgian interiors, including the Reynolds paintings, create a backdrop that is unlike any conventional wedding venue in the region. It is a genuinely remarkable room to get married in.

For outdoor ceremonies, the south-facing grounds and parkland provide several natural settings overlooking the River Avon water meadows and the surrounding landscape. The estate’s scale means there is no shortage of space or privacy.

For larger celebrations, a marquee can be erected in the grounds. This option accommodates up to 200 guests for a wedding breakfast and up to 250 for an evening reception. The marquee sits within the estate grounds, so the wider setting and sense of seclusion remain intact.

Somerley also offers a dedicated woodland wedding option for couples who want something entirely different from the house itself. The woodland ceremony setting uses the natural character of the estate in a more informal way and suits couples who want an outdoor celebration with genuine privacy.

Accommodation

The main house has 9 double bedrooms for the wedding party. In addition, three further properties on the estate offer accommodation for guests who want to remain close. Together, these options make Somerley well suited to a wedding weekend rather than a single-day event.

Pre-wedding dinners, the celebration itself and a post-wedding gathering can all take place within the estate. Given the 7,000-acre setting on the edge of the New Forest, guests rarely feel the need to leave.

Is Somerley Right for Your Wedding?

Somerley suits couples who want a genuinely private, historic stately home wedding in Hampshire, where the house, grounds and the wider estate are entirely theirs. The Picture Gallery is one of the most distinctive ceremony and dining spaces available at any exclusive use venue in England. The New Forest setting and filming credentials add a further layer of character that is difficult to replicate elsewhere.

However, it is not the right choice for couples needing a venue with a large hotel-style accommodation block or those planning a wedding breakfast for more than 140 guests within the house itself. The marquee option extends the capacity significantly, so larger celebrations are very much possible with the right planning.
