Avington Park:

First recorded as “Afintun” in 961 AD, the Avington estate has accumulated more than a thousand years of history in the Itchen Valley, just east of Winchester. It sits within 300 acres of Hampshire countryside inside the South Downs National Park. Charles II used the estate as a royal retreat, and that sense of quiet distinction has remained ever since.

Today, Avington hosts a select number of weddings each year. The estate offers five distinct celebration spaces, on-site accommodation across multiple properties, and the tranquil River Itchen running through the grounds. For couples wanting a wedding venue in Hampshire that feels genuinely private and deeply rooted in the English countryside, it is one of the more distinctive options in the region.

The Wedding Spaces

Avington’s five spaces give couples real flexibility in how they structure the day, from intimate ceremonies to larger celebrations with up to 180 guests.

The Rose Garden is an outdoor space sheltered by a sail canopy, surrounded by blooms and greenery. It holds up to 150 guests and works well for ceremonies and receptions alike. The setting is particularly strong in summer, when the garden is in full colour.

The Riverside space runs alongside the River Itchen and accommodates up to 180 guests under an optional marquee. One of its more memorable features is the option for couples to arrive by boat – a genuinely rare touch for a Hampshire wedding venue.

The Orangery is the main indoor space. Flooded with natural light and offering views across the gardens, it holds up to 180 guests and suits ceremonies, wedding breakfasts and receptions. Its connection to the outdoors makes it a versatile choice across the seasons.

The Library is a smaller, more intimate space with a grand fireplace, wood panelling and classic Georgian character. It holds up to 80 guests and works well for ceremonies or more contained celebrations.

The Conservatories offer the most intimate setting on the estate, holding up to 30 guests. They overlook the grounds and suit smaller gatherings or drinks receptions.

Accommodation

Avington’s wedding packages include exclusive use of the Pavilion and five apartments, providing 17 bedrooms for the wedding party. In addition, 12 further properties across the estate offer 30 extra bedrooms, and the estate’s own pub, The Chestnut Horse in the neighbouring village of Easton, has four rooms. As a result, the estate can comfortably accommodate a wide range of guests across the wedding weekend.

This setup makes Avington well suited to multi-day celebrations. Pre-wedding dinners, the wedding day and a post-wedding gathering can all take place within the estate, without guests needing to travel elsewhere.

Is Avington Right for Your Wedding?

Avington works best for couples who want a countryside wedding in Hampshire with a genuinely historic setting, flexible indoor and outdoor spaces, and the option for guests to stay on site. The River Itchen, the rose garden and the South Downs National Park setting give it a character that is hard to replicate closer to the city.

However, it is not the right choice for couples wanting a grand stately home format with a single large ballroom, or those needing a venue that can seat more than 180 guests for a wedding breakfast. The estate works best when couples embrace its variety of smaller, distinct spaces rather than looking for one dominant room.
