Getting Married in Marrakech, Morocco

8th of March 2023

Thanks to its incredible culture, venues and food, Marrakech is one of the hottest up-and-coming wedding destinations in the world. We spoke to Bruce Russell, international wedding planner with a team based in Morocco, to get his recommendations on marrying in Marrakech...

Marrakech is one of those destinations that just sounds exotic. Saying the city’s name out loud brings to mind old world charm, a sense of mystery, and cultural traditions steeped in history. The reality today is that while it maintains that historical charm, it’s also cosmopolitan, modern and accessible, which is why it’s one of the most sought after destination wedding locations - especially for Europeans, given that it’s a mere 3-3.5 hour flight away.

I’ve had the pleasure of planning a number of weddings in Marrakech in the last few years, and have fallen in love with the destination. It’s not easy to work there, and couples can initially find it quite stressful - replies to enquiries can be quite slow, and venues can try to ‘encourage’ you to use their recommended vendors. Personally, I do recommend hiring a wedding planner, whether they are based there or local to you, though I feel it’s important that they have experience working in the area. French is my first language, which makes communication easier, but I also have a few contacts locally to help with logistics which is invaluable. Apart from that, it’s a stunning destination which has something for everyone - from the traditional, to the more modern touches, with options to suit every budget. Marrakech is at the top of my list!

Venues

Royal Mansour

It just doesn’t get better than this. Accommodation is in the most luxurious of traditional riads, and the grounds are sublime. Perfect for an intimate wedding, or if the budget allows, privatisation of the entire resort. The Spa, the outdoor pool, the food and beverage, and the service (with a staff to guest ratio of 2.5:1) - it’s simply perfection! Insider tip: the breakfast alone is worth the visit! See more from Royal Mansour here.

El Fenn

For those seeking that old world charm of Marrakech, but appreciate the modern luxuries, this is the place for you. In the heart of Medina madness, is this oasis of calm and style. You’ll want to Instagram every detail of this place! The rooftop is the perfect location for a wedding celebration, and a great party. I always pop in for a cocktail whenever I’m in Marrakech - they make the best Cosmopolitans outside of New York City!

La Mamounia

The ‘grande dame’ of hospitality in Marrakech, this place is part of the fabric of this wonderful city. Each time I walk in, the scent reminds me of where I am - a mix of jasmine, orange blossom, cedar and aged leather…every detail has been carefully considered. If I could live in their spa I would! Book a hammam, you won’t regret it. Find out more about La Mamounia here.

Beldi Country Club

A favourite for European couples looking for the rustic charm that is truly Morocco. Once a hidden secret, it’s now one of the most popular of wedding locations, so you’ll need to act fast and book in your date. I highly recommend exclusive use of this property as the options are endless. Their chicken tagine with confit of lemon and olives is one of my favourite dishes!

Floral Designers

I have two ‘go to’ floral designers that I love in Marrakech.

Yassab Floral Design

Sabrina and her team are young, dynamic and creative. They work closely with you to create the perfect design for your special day - something that fits with the setting and your personal style.

Le Kiosque a Fleurs

I worked with Catherine on my first wedding in Marrakech over 5 years ago. She gets it, and will go above and beyond to make it happen.

Top Tip: Importing flowers in Morocco can be expensive which is why they tend to work with ‘local’ flowers such as roses, which are in abundance in the country. Have the conversation with your designer early in the planning process so you can budget accordingly.

Extra Touches

Cote Bougie

Scented candles are always a must for me. Cote Bougie in Marrakech have the most amazing range of scents, and can do anything bespoke.

Show Partners

You’ll undoubtedly require sound and lighting for your wedding, and the most professional company I’ve encountered in Marrakech is Show Partners - they’re professional, reliable, carry the latest equipment, and will deliver exactly what was discussed. They are worth the investment!

Activities

There is so much to see and do in Marrakech, which is why it’s a perfect destination for your wedding guests as well. Whether you organise group activities, or let your guests explore on their own, here’s my short list of must do and see:

  • A berber breakfast in the desert with sunrise hot air balloon ride
  • Stroll through the Majorelle Gardens
  • Be inspired at the YSL Museum
  • Shopping for a bargain (and getting lost) in the Souks
  • Spa - a traditional hammam is a must
  • Lunch at La Terrace des Epices
